Physiotherapy is a university educated primary health care profession that focuses on improving and maintaining physical wellness. Physiotherapists have an advanced understanding of body mechanics (how we move) and Physiotherapists have been specifically educated and trained to assess and treat a variety of musculoskeletal pain, injuries and general dysfunction. When you first see a physiotherapist, you are assessed to determine where the injury has occurred and its severity. This assessment includes a health history, evaluation of pain and movement patterns, strength, joint range of motion and reflexes. Based on the assessment, the physiotherapist establishes a diagnosis and works in partnership with you to develop individualized goals and treatment programs. The treatment can consist of a combination of manual therapy, electrical modalities, activity modification and the use of heat or ice and prescribed exercises and/or stretches.
